Tangkahan (‘the lost paradise’) is a village located just 2 hours drive from Bukit Lawang. Famous for its Sumatran elephants, it also offers a natural unspoilt environment where you can experience a unique jungle adventure together with elephants. We can provide all the necessary arrangements to make your experience truly magical.
option.1 day elephant adventure
At around 9am, your guide will collect you from your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang and you will start your journey to Tangkahan by aircon jeep (2 hours) along bumpy roads through villages and palm oil plantations. On arrival, after registering with the park office, you will start your elephant trek through the jungle (2 hours), where your guide will explain how Tangkahan became a protected area for elephants, as well as showing you the local flora, fauna and wildlife.
After your trek, you will have the opportunity to wash and feed the elephants, before eating lunch at a traditional restaurant overlooking the river.
Afternoon – a short walk from the restaurant and a swim across the river leads you to a natural hot spring, where you will have time to swim and relax, before visiting the caves (depending on time and weather) on your drive back to your guesthouse in Bukit Lawang.

Option 2.elephant trek
Spend 2 hours trekking with Sumatran elephants through the jungle of Gunung Leuser national park, where your guide will explain how Tangkahan became a protected area for elephants, as well as showing you the local flora, fauna and wildlife.

Spend an hour getting up close to Sumatran elephants. Not only will you get to wash and feed them but if you’re lucky you may also get an ‘elephant shower’ or kiss.
